Octopus Treasure Review

Play’n Go takes you down to the bottom of the sea to hunt for riches in their latest creation called Octopus Treasure. The giant creature is pulsating in slow motion behind the transparent reels at all times, and you might get a bit seasick if you focus too much on it. Luckly, the spinning reels are bound to catch your attention most of the time, but the sea monster has a tentacle or 4 in the game as well. The cephalopod will unlock the treasure chest seen above the middle reel at random times, and this gives you 1 of 4 reel modifiers.

The game is visually well-made, and the octopus has been nicely weaved into the gameplay in a way that makes the whole thing feel almost too alive. It all plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 paylines, and you can place bets between 20p and £100 per spin across all platforms and devices. The medium volatility should appeal to most casual players, and there is nothing to say on the 5,000x potential in that regard. You will, however, need to be lucky with the randomly triggered post-feature multiplier to get anywhere close to those kinds of sums.

The biggest drawback of this game is the somewhat tedious feature animations. It’s cool for a while, but when you keep getting very little out of all the octopus meddling, it doesn’t take too long before the whole thing becomes a bit annoying. You want to scream: “Just give me the damn feature already you giant pudding!”, and in the bonus round you will have to endure the tentacle unlocking the chest on every single spin. Of course, those rare times it brings bigger wins it feels a lot better, and we got a decent one in our 200 spins test session (check out the video highlights further down in the review).

What are the bonus features?

The big octopus lurking behind the reels is involved in all of the bonus features in this game, and there are plenty to cover here. You can land a key symbol on the middle reel on any given spin, and you’ll then see the octopus reach around the reels and use the key to open up the treasure chest sitting on top of the middle reel. This will give you 1 of 4 different reel modifying features:

  • Wild Coins – you’ll get to pick 3 coins from the bottom of the sea, and these coins reveal which symbols that are transformed into wilds.
  • Wild Reels – you pick pots on the bottom of the sea, and these will turn whole reels wild.
  • Treasure Grab – the octopus collects symbols that give you an instant cash prize.
  • Gold Pile – random symbols are upgraded to increase your winnings.

What’s more, you will also sometimes benefit from a random multiplier after any of the above features have played out.

The multiplier will boost your total bonus feature win with either 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x, but it does not happen every time.

You can also land a coral reef wild on the reels, and it comes with the word “wild” written in bold golden type. The wild will step in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combos, and it also comes with a value of its own. You win 5x your stake for 5 wilds on a payline, and also 3 or 4 on a payline pay out 1x or 2x, respectively.

Free spins in Octopus Treasure

The free spins bonus round is triggered when you land 3 pearl scatter symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5. This triggers a Key Re-spins feature first, where only key symbols or blanks will land. The octopus will collect the keys, and you are granted the same number of free spins as the number of keys that are collected. You will always get at least 5 keys, and 10 free spins is the most you can get here.

You will benefit from 1 of the 4 bonus features from the base game on each and every free spin. Which feature you get is randomly chosen per spin, and you can also land key symbols that add one extra spin to your tally. There is no upper limit as to how many extra “Treasure Spins” you can win this way, and the random multiplier up to 10x might be applied at the end of the free spins feature.

How to play

Play’n Go has a very recognizable game interface, and although it comes with different skins for different games, the basic setup is always the same.

In this section of the review we will take a closer look at how things work, and what you should know about before you get started with playing Octopus Treasure slot.

You can start by checking out the info section and the paytable via the “i” button down to the left. It comes with 6 slides, and the first thing you’ll see is info about the different bonus features. These come with nice illustrations to make things even more clear for you, and you’ll find the actual paytable on the last 2 slides. This is a dynamic paytable, which means that the symbol values are updated according to your chosen bet level.

There are 4 premium treasure symbols, ranging from 2x to 3.5x in value, and the top payer is the gold coins, dagger and crown treasure. You win by landing 3 to 5 matching symbols on a payline from the uttermost left to the right, and you have 20 fixed paylines in this game. The 4 royal symbols have a value ranging from 2x to 1x, and look like card suit symbols carved in stone.

You can now check out the game settings via the hamburger menu down to the left.

The 200 Spins Octopus Treasure Experience

We like how the octopus has been given such an active role in this game, and we looked forward to seeing its many tricks in our 200 spins test session. We switched on the fast play option to get a comfortable pace, and maxed out the bet value with 100 play money credits per spin.

It didn’t take long before we got our first meeting with an octopus feature, and the treasure chest unlocked the gold pile feature which transformed a bunch of symbols into the highest value gold treasure symbol. This landed us a 3.3x win, which was not all that impressive to be honest. We then ran into a losing streak of dead spins and minute wins for a while.

Out of the blue we landed 3 pearl scatter symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5, and the Key Re-spins feature was triggered. We got 3 respins, and crossed our fingers for a massive key collection. We ended up with 8 in total, which is not too bad considering that 10 is the most you can get, and we were excited to see how the Treasure bonus round would play out with an octopus treasure feature on every spin.

We triggered the treasure grab on the first spin, and won 1.45x our stake. The same feature kept coming up on several spins, but we landed only smaller wins from it. A bunch of wilds landed and gave us an okay win, and our total winnings was now 8.85x our stake. Not exactly something to scream from the rooftop about, but we still had 6 free spins to go.

The wild reels feature was triggered, but the wild reels somehow ended up in a configuration that didn’t earn us a single dime. We also got 1 extra spin at this point, and triggered the wild coins feature. We had yet to land any massive wins from any of the features, but it all added up to 16.35x as we had 4 spins to go. The wild coin feature got triggered again, and this time we won a decent 18x our stake from all the wilds we got.

The wild coin feature was triggered a few more times in our final spins, and we got lucky and won 2 extra spins towards the end. This gave us a few treasure grab features also, and our total win after all the free spins had played out was 53.55x our stake. However, we got blessed with a 5x multiplier in the end, and this boosted our total win up to a solid 266.75x our stake.

Review Summary

Octopus Treasure comes with a nicely done theme where the octopus plays a very active part in the gameplay. This adds a certain aliveness to the game, but it’s also a source of frustration, unfortunately. Many times the somewhat lengthy octopus animations will not lead to anything but minute wins (or even a dead spin), and this is especially true in the base game, of course.

It breaks up the regular grind for sure, but replaces it with something that’s not all that exciting either. The Treasure Free Spins round comes with these tedious animations on every spin, but you might need to be lucky with the random multiplier in the end (if you get one) to win anything of significance. Octopus Treasure is an okay title from a busy developer, but it comes across as a bit clumsy and annoying at times.

Pros

  • 4 randomly triggered reel modifiers
  • Random multiplier might trigger after any feature up to 10x
  • Free spins with 1 of the 4 modifiers on every spin
  • Medium volatility and 5,000x max win potential

Cons

  • Lengthy feature animations become annoying after a while
  • Beware of customizable RTP ranges

If you enjoy water world games, we have 383 in our catalog (at the time of writing) you can check out. If you want more games specifically including an octopus, we have 150 of those also. Below, we have taken the liberty of hand selecting a few related games for you, and you can find out more by following the respective links.

Release the Kraken - is a Pragmatic Play creation that comes with 3 base game bonus features. These can be multipliers, mega symbols and spreading wilds to name a few, and you will also benefit from a bonus round with expanded reel set and a progressive multiplier that increases for every sticky roaming wild you land.

Ocean's Treasure - comes with stacked wilds in the base game, but the big attraction here is the 5 level bonus round. You will benefit from a progressive multiplier that can go up to 12x, and this can land you impressive wins up to 18,000x your stake. This is an interesting and highly volatile subsea creation from NetEnt.

Beat the Beast Krakens Lair - is the first in Thunderkick’s volatile beasts series, and it’s arguably also among the better games in the series. Wins up to 7,777x your stake is possible here, and the “expanding wins” feature expands symbols that are part of a winning combo including a wild. The bonus round comes with a guaranteed wild on all spins, and you’re definitely in for an exciting ride with this game.
