Age of Conquest Review

There are so many fantasy themed slots out there that keeping any kind of overview is more or less impossible. Las Vegas based Neon Vally Studios has published this latest addition to the genre, Age of Conquest, on the Microgaming platform, and this is their third game so far. Undoubtedly, this is a young and eager developer testing the waters, and Age of Conquest is certainly quite different from their previous Mega Moolah network title, Atlantean Treasures. Is it a game worthy of your time and your hard-earned money. Well, those who read on will know.

Let’s cover the basics first. The visuals are decent here, but it cannot be denied that Neon Valley has taken a shortcut. The main stacked symbol characters (male and female) are lifted directly from Forbidden Throne, with very few modifications. They probably didn’t think anyone would notice, but in this digital age that is not a wise assumption. It cheapens the feel of the game from the get-go, which is not exactly a good start. Is it really that much extra work to come up with something original. We hardly think so, and not least if you aim to prove yourself as a worthy developer.

It all plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 ways to win, and you can place bets between 20p and £200, which is a decent bet range for sure. Playing on your mobile and tablet is no problem because of HTML5 technology, and the gameplay is quite basic and straightforward here.

You will benefit from a lot of wilds, stacked symbols and wild reels, and filling up a diamond meter above each reel will turn the corresponding reel into a wild reel. You have a choice between 3 different free spins features, which is neat, and the most volatile option comes with only 2 spins and 3 guaranteed wild reels on each spin.

What are the bonus features?

You’ll find some decent bonus features in this game, but nothing really innovative or new. The 2 lead characters in Age of Conquest slot, the knight and the princess (we assume that’s their roles), can both land as fully stacked symbols. These are also the highest value regular symbols, so this can definitely help you land some decent wins.

On top of each reel you’ll see a diamond bonus meter, and 2 diamonds can fit in the meter above each respective reel. Everytime you land the diamond symbol, the meter above the reel where you landed the diamond will be filled with 1 of 2 diamonds. Whenever you fill a meter with 2 diamonds, you trigger the Wild Reels bonus feature.

Anytime this happens, the whole reel will turn into a wild symbol for the next 2 spins. Once the 2 spins are finished, the reel goes back to its normal function and the diamond meter resets. Wilds are the highest value symbols in the game by far, and they pay 50x your stake for 5 on a payline.

Obviously, turning all reels into wilds will be quite lucrative, and this gives you the biggest win possible in this game.

Free spins in Age of Conquest

The scatter symbol in Age of Conquest is the golden throne, and you need to land it on reels 1, 3 and 5 at the same time to trigger the free spins bonus round. The wild reels are very much a part of the free spins feature also, and whenever you trigger the bonus round you will be presented with 3 different options as follows:

  • 25 spins with 1 guaranteed wild reel on each spin
  • 8 spins with 2 guaranteed wild reels on each spin
  • 2 spins with 3 guaranteed wild reels on each spin

We would probably go for the golden middle way here, as 8 spins with 2 wild reels sound pretty good. Keep in mind that the wild reels can also land organically at any time on all the reels in the bonus round, as you don’t need to fill up any diamond meter here. Filling the reels with nothing but wilds is therefore that much more possible, and you can also retrigger the free spins round by landing golden throne scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 during the feature.

How to play

The game interface is quite straightforward in this game, and you’ll find most anything you need via the hamburger menu down in the left-hand side corner. Here we’ll prepare you for the gameplay by walking you through all the essentials, but if you already are an experienced slot player you might not need to read this part. Beginners should probably pay attention though, as you might pick up a thing or two of value.

You can start by clicking the “i” icon, which takes you into the Age of Conquest paytable.

Here you can read all about the bonus features, and scroll down to see the respective symbol combination values. This is a dynamic paytable, so the values will shift according to your chosen total stake. Everything is illustrated with nice visuals, and you can also check out how the bet lines work here.

Game workflow

Click the . icon either in the hamburger menu or in the top left corner, and you’ll open a new window. Here you can read everything about this game in detail, such as all the game rules and other formal information. The small gear icon takes you to the game settings, and here you can turn off the intro screen, turn on quick spin and toggle on/off the game sounds and/or the background music.

The time has finally come to choose your bet level, and the bet range here is between 20p and £200 per spin. A pretty solid range that should be suitable for most players.

The autoplay feature is rather simple, as it lets you choose either 10, 25, 50 or 100 autospins, and that’s it. With that, you are pretty much ready to get going, and next up we’ll talk about where you can play Age of Conquest slot.

The 200 Spins Age of Conquest Experience

The most exciting part of the review process is always when we get to take the new game for our 200 spin test run. Even though we are not the biggest fan of what Microgaming has become, Neon Valley Studios is a new and independent developer that deserves a chance to prove themselves. We set our total stake per spin to £1, as we usually do, and set up the game for our first 100 autospins.

Wilds are in abundance here, and you’ll pretty much land some version of them on every spin. We got plenty of full wild reels even without filling the diamond meter, which kind of defeats the purpose. Why collect these diamonds when it seems to make very little difference anyway, we thought. However, on one occasion we landed a bigger win of 25.5x when 2 diamond meters were filled, so perhaps there is something to it after all.

Small to medium size wins come most of the time too, so staying afloat is not very hard on this medium variance title. Winning big, well that’s another question. We triggered the free spins bonus round after around 50 spins, and we decided to play it safe the first time. We therefore went for the 8 spins option with 2 guaranteed wild reels.

Win

The blue wild banner kept being rolled out on 2 different reels on every spin, but it did not benefit us all that much. We won a total of 36x our stake in the end, which was just enough to keep us going. Around 30-40 spins later we triggered the bonus round yet again, and this time we decided to go for the hardcore volatile 2 spins option with 3 guaranteed wild reels on each spin.

It would have felt more natural with 3 spins to be honest, but 2 is what we got and it amounted to only 14.75x our stake in the end. Not exactly something to brag about on social media, and this is an “even-steven” game for sure. After 200 spins we (you guessed it) broke even more or less to the penny, and our session wasn’t all that exciting to be totally honest. Hopefully, your first 200 spins will yield a far better result than ours did.

Review Summary

This game would have been served better by downplaying the amount of wilds that land in the base game, and make the diamond triggered wild reels actually count more when you do get them. As it stands now, you hardly notice if the wild you got came from filling the diamond meter, or if it was just a regular wild reel.

Age of Conquest is still a decent enough game, for rest-on-their-laurels Microgaming standards at least, and we like the 3 different options when you trigger the bonus round. However, the graphics, and especially the 2 main character symbols, have been reused from Forbidden Throne, which cheapens the whole experience. Albeit, the female is a tad more decently dressed in this game, which can be both good or bad, depending on how conservative you are.

Pros

  • Fully stacked character symbols
  • Full wild reels via diamond bonus meter
  • 3 different free spins modes with 1, 2 or 3 wild reels
  • Medium volatility and 1,000x max win potential

Cons

  • Nothing new or original to see here, including the graphics

Medieval themes are a dime a dusin in the casino world, and you’ll have no trouble finding plenty of games similar to this. We have handpicked a few noteworthy slots you can check out if you enjoyed playing Age of Conquest, and you can read more about them, and try the free demo game, via the links below.

Forbidden Throne - is the game Neon Valley has borrowed the graphics from to create this game, so we thought it deserved a mention here. It also comes with wild reels, and you are guaranteed at least one wild reel on any given base game spin. There is also a free spins bonus round to look forward to here, with up to 30 spins at most. Not a must try exactly, but perhaps worth checking out if you want to see the female character in an even sexier outfit.

Tower Tumble - is a Relax Gaming slot with nice visuals that plays out on a 6x6 grid. You can win up to 5,150x your stake here, which is solid, and you trigger the bonus round by destroying all the stone tiles in view. There are 3 different bonus round modes to choose from here also, and each has a unique number of spins and different volatility. The medieval fantasy theme is more lighthearted here, and this title is well worth checking out.

Rise of the Mountain King - is a visually stunning game with well-made animations and 2 exciting main bonus features. You’ll find a nice respins feature here, as well as a free spins bonus round. The volatility is high, but you can win up to an epic 50,000x your stake, so it should be worth a bit of risk to conquer this mountain king.
