4 Corners Of Rome Review

Microgaming partner, Northern Lights Gaming, has taken a stab at many different genres already, but 4 Corners Of Rome is their first visit to the ancient version of ‘The Eternal City of Seven Hills’. The 4 corners of the 5x5 grid are highlighted by magnified symbol positions, and these are instrumental in triggering the core Lock and Load feature.

You get a blurred out vision of classic Roman temples by what looks like a river of some kind in the backdrop, and the soundtrack reminded us of the Hollywood blockbuster Troy (2004). The Lock and Load feature gives you plenty of sticky symbols respin action in all stages of the game, not least when it triggers on every bonus round spin.

4 Corners Of Rome Slot Features

The premium symbols pay between 1 and 2.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays the same as the top-tier centurion helmet. The Wild symbol also steps in for regular pay symbols to help complete wins, and it can appear on all 5 reels.

You’ll see the Lock and Load Multiplier up to the left of the grid, and it starts at x1. The multiplier increases by +1 every time you land 2 scatters anywhere in view, and it can go as high as x5 at the most. The multiplier does not apply to regular wins however, but is instead used to boost your next total Lock and Load win (see below). It resets to x1 again after that.

The 4 corner positions on the grid are highlighted with larger squares, and these are the Lock and Load positions.

4 Corners Of Rome Slot Gameplay

The Lock and Load feature triggers when you land 2 matching symbols in the diagonally opposite corner positions, and this transforms all symbols on the diagonal line between them into the same symbol as the triggering symbols.

The diagonal line of matching symbols becomes locked for a respin, and winning symbols become locked. This repeats as long as you keep winning. If all 4 corners are active in the Lock and Load feature, the center position where the 2 diagonal lines intersect turns wild. Any locking line symbol that becomes part of a win also turns wild, and your achieved Lock and Load multiplier is applied as the feature ends.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3 scatters on reels 2, 3 and 4, and this takes you to the Bonus Selector screen for the following options:

  • 3 free spins where all 4 corners can turn wild (very high volatility).
  • 6 free spins where 3 corners can turn wild (high volatility).
  • 9 free spins where 2 corners can turn wild (medium volatility).

The Lock and Load feature is guaranteed to trigger on each free spin, and if it leads to a full screen win you get extra free spins added to your tally. More specifically, you get +3 extra spins in the very high volatility feature, +2 extra spins in the high volatility feature and +1 extra spin in the medium volatility feature.

The Lock and Load Multiplier is carried over from the base game, and you can level up the multiplier via multiplier symbols that land exclusively in the bonus round.

The multiplier symbols increase the Lock and Load multiplier by +1 per symbol, up to x5 at best.

The Bonus Buy option is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. You can gamble to win the bonus round with a 10 to 90 % chance depending on how much you’re willing to bet (10 to 90 x your stake). You can also purchase a spin on the wheel that guarantees the feature for 100x your stake, and you get a random Lock and Load starting multiplier either way.

The 200 Spins 4 Corners Of Rome Slot Experience

You get to see a minute and a half of pretty uneventful base game grinding, before we decided to try our luck with the bonus gamble feature. We lost 3 times before the needle finally stopped in the green zone, and we decided to go with the golden middle way 6 free spins option. We got lucky with the starting Lock and Load multiplier, and you can see it all for yourself by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

We were not super impressed by the visuals in 4 Corners Of Rome, but they do get the job done. The Lock and Load feature on the other hand, felt kind of fresh and it contains a certain amount of entertainment value. It’s basically just a twist on the winning symbol respins feature we’ve seen many times before though, but when a decent multiplier is added to the mix interesting things can happen also in the base game.

The excitement is somewhat held back by the low symbol values though. A top-tier full screen payout boosted by the maxed out x5 multiplier awards 500x your stake, but you can get plenty of back-to-back wins before the screen is filled.

The most volatile FS option seems extremely risky, and we would probably go for the middle way most of the time. The 6,300x potential is solid enough, and at least Northern Lights has tried to do something somewhat original with this release.

Pros

  • Lock and Load sticky winning symbols respins
  • Lock and Load Multiplier up to x5
  • 3 FS options w/ L&L on each spin
  • FS gamble & buy feature (not UK)
  • Win up to 6,300x your stake

Cons

  • Low overall symbol values
  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges
