Scarab Gold Review

With a golden capped pyramid in the background, the 6x5 grid is set in the desert between hieroglyph inscribed ruins. Scarab Gold comes with a decent visual presentation, and the dramatic shift into the nighttime bonus round is neatly done. You’ll see hieroglyphs that glow in the dark, and the activated pyramid cap shooting a red laser beam into the starry night sky.

Inspired’s trademarked Mystery Boost™feature was first rolled out in Bonus Island, and although there are similarities, Scarab Gold is a very different game overall. The RTP has been adjusted further down for whatever reason, and this game is less feature heavy. Significant payouts will come from the progressive multiplier bonus round, combined with mystery symbols and coin/extra spin wins.

Scarab Gold Features

The Cascading Wins feature removes all winning symbols from the grid, and new symbols drop down to fill the gaps. The process repeats as long as you keep landing new winning combinations. There are no wild symbols to help you out, but instead you get the Mystery Boost feature.

This is essentially a mystery symbol feature, but with an interesting twist.

You’ll land blank stone symbols with a scarab carved out on a regular basis, and these become active only when a gemstone scarab Transform symbol lands at the same time.

Scarabs crawl out from under the Transform symbol, and find their way to the blank stone symbols where they fit neatly into the carved out shape. The mystery symbols then transform into a matching pay symbol, and the process goes on as long as you land new empty mystery symbols on the following cascades.

You trigger the Bonus Round when you land at least 3 pyramid scatters anywhere in sight. The minimum of 3 scatters awards 10 free spins, and you get +2 extra spins per extra scatter you land above the minimum. A progressive and unlimited win multiplier will now increase by +1 per cascade.

Special blue/black scarab symbols will land instead of the regular mystery and transform symbols. These special scarabs will either function as mystery symbols, and thus transform into matching symbols, or award extra spins and/or coin wins.

If you get the coins, you’ll see each position spin with cash coins and extra spin coins, and the coins will also cascade to increase the win multiplier.

The 200 Spins Scarab Gold Experience

You’ll see the Scarab Mystery Symbol feature in action a few times before we trigger the bonus round. This happens at 1:08 into the 4-minute highlights video, and you’ll probably enjoy the dramatic scenery as the pyramid gets activated during nightfall. The special scarabs landed quite often, but most of the time they provide the regular mystery symbols feature. See for yourself by hitting the play button.

Review Summary

The combination of 15,625 ways, and repeat cascading scarab mystery symbol payouts, is enough to keep the base game somewhat interesting. Granted, the mystery symbols are blocking regular symbol wins when inactive, but this is easy to forgive since they usually provide at least one decent win when you also land the Transform scarab.

There is nothing too revolutionary about a bonus round with a progressive multiplier and mystery symbols, but the coin wins plus extra spins feature adds a dash of novelty (although it was first seen in Bonus Island). All in all, the features combine well to get the job done, and everything adds up to a pretty entertaining and well-balanced ancient Egypt experience. Well, everything except the 94.9 % RTP.

Pros

  • MysteryBoost™ feature
  • Bonus round w/ multiplier and mystery symbols
  • Max win capped at £250,000
