Fishing War Game Review

If you’re looking for a casino game experience outside of the ordinary, you don’t need to look any further than Fishing War from asia-based Spadegaming. We would hardly describe this as a slot at all, as it has more in common with shoot ‘em up games you’ll normally find on your mobile phone or tablet. It’s not the first game attempting to bridge the gap between casino and mobile games, however, as Max Quest: Wrath of Ra will forever have that honor.

Fishing War does not sound like a peaceful and idyllic fishing trip, and it’s really not. This is a game with non-stop action, plenty of moving parts and 8 different bonus features. Up to 4 players can play in the same game, and you choose difficulty level and bet range up front from 3 different options. The gameplay is all about shooting different fish and creatures of the sea with a cannon, and you upgrade the weapon by increasing your bet level.

The 8 bonus features all come in the form of special creatures you need to take down, and the biggest bonus catches will be announced well ahead of time. The Ghost Ship provides the game’s max win potential of 888x your stake, but you’ll probably need help from other players to defeat this rugged thing.

You need to be careful with your ammo here, as each shoot fired is subtracted directly from your bankroll, and wasting ammo/credits is hardly a good idea if you want to get out of this underwater war zone in profit.

What symbols are there?

This is a game where having overview of the paytable is actually crucial. It’s up to you which sea creature you prioritize to take down with your cannon, and for this reason you need to know which creature is worthwhile spending a lot of ammo/bets on. Since there are 21 regular sea creature “symbols” (if we can call it that), we will only list up the 7 most valuable ones below. As a rule of thumb, the bigger and more ornamented a creature is, the more the creature will be worth your while. Here is what the paytable looks like for Fishing War slot:

  • 7 lower value fish and sea creatures - Pays between 2x and 8x
  • 7 medium value fish and sea creatures - Pays between 9x and 18x
  • Blowfish - Pays 20x
  • Shark - Pays between 20x and 30x
  • Golden shark - Pays between 25x and 45x
  • Hammerhead shark - Pays between 30x and 50x
  • Golden hammerhead shark - Pays between 40x and 60x
  • King Crab - Pays between 50x and 200x
  • Jade Toad - Pays between 50x and 400x

What are the bonus features?

Just like there is no shortage of fish in the ocean, there is no shortage of bonus features you can trigger in this game.

Keep your eyes peeled for special creatures that will sometimes appear, as you should always prioritize bonus creatures with your cannon because of the bigger wins and benefits they provide. Here we will quickly run through all the special creatures to be on the lookout for, and what they can do for you.

  • The Dragon King - Pays out between 10x and 300x, but you can work together with other players to take it out and win a lucky bonus.
  • The Firestorm - You get between 30 and 100 free bullets, so you might consider this the game’s “free spins” feature. The bonus round is finished when all bullets/credits have been used up.
  • The Thunder Hammer - unleashes a lightning effect that takes out random fish/creatures and gives you a win between 30x and 100x.
  • The Azure Stone - first gives you a 10x win once taken down, and then the whole sea is frozen for 10 seconds and the multiplier per sea creature increases.
  • The Wealth Packet - will be awarded at random times after you take down a creature, and you will then choose 1 of 5 red packets for a win up to 200x.
  • The Wealth Packet - will be awarded at random times after you take down a creature, and you will then choose 1 of 5 red packets for a win up to 200x.
  • The Awakening Dragon - will give you wins between 100x and 488x, and you will see at least 2 explosions that take out fish and creatures all over the place.
  • The Monkey King - Same as the above, but now payouts will be between 100x and 688x.
  • The Pirate Ghost Ship - Players will work together to take down this one, which is the most rewarding in the game. If you are successful, a massive earthquake will shake the whole screen and you can win up to 888x your stake.

Free spins in Fishing War

Since this is no ordinary video slot, there are no such things as “spins” here at all. However, the closest thing to a free spins bonus round comes from the Firestorm feature mentioned above. This awards you with up to 100 free bullets (or credits), and it’s the only way you can shoot fish and sea creatures without spending any money in this game.

How to play

We have to admit that we were somewhat confused when we first started to play Fishing War “slot”, as it’s not exactly the kind of game we usually get on our proverbial desk. Still, it did not take all that long to get into the swing of things, and here we shall guide you through everything you need to know to get started with this unusual game in no-time.

When you start the game, you will get to choose between 3 different game modes, namely Junior Mode, Expert Mode and Godlike mode. The main difference between the modes is the bet range and the difficulty level when it comes to taking down the creatures:

  • Junior Mode (low volatility): 1p to £1
  • Expert Mode (medium volatility): 10p to £5
  • Godlike Mode (high volatility): £1 to £10

You are then taken into the ocean pool, and the cannon that belongs to you is pointed out as there might be up to 3 other cannons/players in the same game.

The higher the bet level you choose, the more powerful your cannon becomes, and this is reflected in the visual change of the cannon as you increase/decrease the bet level. There are 4 different “skill” icons lined up vertically to the left-hand side, and these are special attack modes you can choose from at all times during the gameplay. They work as follows:

  • Target - It cannot be overstated how useful and important the target mode is. It allows you to place a target on any creature’s back, and your cannon fire will not be blocked by other creatures swimming in the way. It will fire only at the targeted creature automatically, until the creature is either taken down or swims out of view.
  • Auto - Allows you to select as many creatures from the paytable as you wish, and your cannon will now automatically target these creatures and ignore the rest.
  • Double - this makes your cannon into a dual cannon. It has twice the effect, but also costs you twice as much per shot.
  • Lightning - allows you to zap any fish or creature you want with lightning, but it’s not really a worthwhile weapon in our experience.

A wave will sometimes roll across the screen, and this only means that the scenery is changing.

It’s good to remember that skills actually play a part in this game, namely the skill of wasting as little ammo/credits as possible. This is the big challenge here, as you will sometimes waste a lot on a target that either swims out of reach, or is taken down by a competitor.

The 200 Spins Fishing War Trial

This reviewer is not really of the mobile game shoot ‘em up generation, and the closest thing to Fishing War we’ve tried before is Max Quest: Wrath of Ra, which was launched back in 2018. We have to say that we enjoyed Fishing War more, but both games are a bit too chaotic and confusing for our poor, old-school brain to keep track of. Either way, we gave it our best shot, and we’ll tell you all about how it went right here.

We tested the game in all 3 game modes, but we soon found that the “golden middleway” Expert Mode suited us best, so that’s where we played our longest run. We started out with 2,000 credits, and we sat the price per cannon shot to 1 credit. We immediately turned on target mode, as this allows us to spend our ammunition (i.e. money) on only the exact sea creature we want to take down, and nothing else.

What became immediately apparent is that you will sometimes have to fire a seemingly endless amount of bullets towards a creature to take it down, while at other times the very same creature can be won over within seconds (the harder it is, the higher the reward will usually be). It’s therefore important to not target creatures that are on their way out of the screen, as this means all your ammo/money was wasted.

Winscreen

Sometimes one or two competitors would pop in and start firing too, and this can be somewhat annoying as they can steal a bonus creature you’ve spent a lot of ammo/money to take down. There are plenty of bonus creatures most of the time though, and we got a lot of the Dragon Wheel, Thunder Hammer and Azur Stone. Nonetheless, we seemed to break even most of the time, cause you usually have to spend a lot to take down the more lucrative bonuses.

By some miracle, we actually got the lucrative Monkey King feature 5 times in a row towards the end of our test run. We did not even have to spend all that much ammo to take him down each time, and we ended up with a profit of around £1,000 when we stopped playing after this incredible run. Not bad for a beginner we would have to say, and you can probably do even better if you are more experienced with shoot ‘em ups than we are.

Review Summary

Any slot player who’s also into mobile games and shoot em ups, will probably love Fishing Wars. If you enjoyed Max Quest: Wrath of Ra, there is no reason you will not like this one too. The gameplay is somewhat similar, but the RNG element is not as strong here. Both are multiplier games, however, and it’s all about spending your ammo as wisely as possible. We found Fishing Wars to be the more charming experience of the two, and it’s also somewhat more easy on the eye.

Pros

  • Unique shoot ‘em up gameplay
  • 21 regular sea creatures
  • 8 special bonus creatures
  • RTP of 97 % is well above average
  • Skill plays a part when it comes to not wasting ammo/credits

Cons

  • Not for people who prefer traditional slots
  • Gameplay can be a bit chaotic and confusing
  • Max win of 888x is not all that high

If you appreciate Fishing War you should also try:

Believe it or not, there are actually a few games out there that are similar to Fishing Wars. We will start with the one we’ve already mentioned first, and then we’ll take a look at 2 more games that you’ll probably like if you enjoyed this one.

Max Quest: Wrath of Ra - was the first major attempt to bridge the gap between online slots and RNG-based shoot ‘em up mobile style games.

Betsoft’s title was hyped up for a long time, and the reception was kind of polarized. You either love it or hate it, but it comes with XP progression, customizable avatars, leaderboard prize pools and tons of weapons and features. Well worth looking into, if this is your thing.

Fish Catch - is so similar to Fishing Wars that it can hardly be a coindidence. Also here you can play against up to 3 other players, and you can choose between 5 different cannons, all with different efficiency and cost per shot, as you hunt for the big catch. A Mermaid’s Luck Wheel can land you 250x your stake, and there is plenty of fish in the ocean here also.

Fishing Expedition - is more of a tradional fishing expedition, but this is in no way a traditional video slot. Join the optimistic and joyful fisherman in his small lake boat surrounded by tall mountains, and fish for 8 different types of catches with prizes between £0.15 and £600 attached. It all depends on your bet level, but wins up to £100,000 is possible in this charming little game.
