Yucatans Mystery Review
Yucatan’s Mystery takes you on a trip deep into the damp jungle on the Mexican peninsula famous for its pyramids and remains from the ancient and mysterious Mayan world. Not the most original starting point for a new slot, we know, but Red Tiger has managed to give this one a somewhat unique spin that makes it stand out from the many similar games out there. The Mystery Coin stacks will benefit you on a regular basis here, and not least in the bonus round that also comes with a moving (and potentially growing) ghost-like 2x2 Super Mystery Coin.
The reels are set between two colorful totems, in what appears to be the opening of a temple, and the audiovisual presentation is nicely done here, as usual from this developer. Red Tiger has their own idea about what constitutes a fair and solid math model it seems, and it’s a bit below what many other developers operate with. In addition, you need to be aware that this game comes with customizable RTP ranges. Always check the RTP level before you start playing at a casino, as you don’t want it to be lower than the default of 95.75 %.
You can place bets between 10p and £20 per spin here, and it all plays out on 5 reels, 4 rows and 30 ways to win. The shamanic priestess with her impressive headdress is the main character and symbol here, aside from the Mystery Coins that turn into identical symbols when they land. We had a hard time triggering the bonus round in our 200 spins test session, but we finally got it towards the end. You can find out all about how that went, and more, when you read through the rest of this review.

What are the bonus features?
This game comes with a decently balanced set of bonus features, and you’ll benefit from the somewhat innovative Mystery Coin feature both in the base game and during the bonus round. This is the defining feature of this game in many ways, and you will see a lot of these Mystery Coin symbols as you spin the reels.
The Mystery Coins will usually land in stacks, and you will see them spin around to display and tease with different matching symbols. After the little teaser is over, the Mystery Coins will settle for one randomly chosen symbol. This can lead to bigger or smaller wins, depending on your luck.
It can also sometimes not lead to anything, which can be a bit annoying and time-consuming.Free spins in Yucatan’s MysteryThe mayan pyramid is the scatter symbol in this game, and you need to land 3 on the same spin to trigger the free spins bonus round. You will now see a shimmering blue phantom 2x2 Super Mystery Coin move around on each spin, and it will settle in at a new position every time. The Super Coin will only be activated if regular Mystery Coins are adjacent to it. Then the Super Coin will split into 4+ regular Mystery Coins, and they will all reveal the same matching symbol.
You will also land pyramid scatters during the bonus round, and these are now called extra spin symbols. You will get 1 extra free spin per scatter you land, but these scatters also expand the size of the Super Mystery Coin (which is why we said 4+ above). You can actually grow the Super Mystery Coin to the size of the full grid (5x4), which means you’ll be guaranteed big wins on every spin.
How to play
The minimalistic Red Tiger interface suits this game well, as it needs a bit of open space to breathe properly. Experienced players might wanna skip this part, or skim through it for useful nuggets.
You can check out the paytable via the hamburger menu up in the right corner, but you’ll first have to scroll through a description of all the game features.
The illustrations might help clarify these things for you, and you’ll get to the actual paytable on the 5th slide. It’s a dynamic paytable as usual, and this means the symbol values update according to your bet level. The highest value symbol by far is the face-painted mayan priestess, and you’ll win 25x your stake when you land 5 of a kind with her. In the very last slide you can check out an illustration of all the 30 paylines in this game, and the symbols pay out from left to right starting from reel number 1. You can also toggle on/off the game sound via the speaker icon next to the hamburger menu.
Yucatans MysteryYou can then click the stake button down in the left corner to set your bet level between 10p and £20 per spin. This is a somewhat narrow bet range that might not impress too many high rollers out there. Either way, we recommend that you switch on the turbo button to increase the game pace, and you’ll find this right next to the spin button.
It’s the one with a double arrow. You can also set up the autoplay feature via the “auto” button down to the left. Here you can choose between 10 and 100 autospins, and you will also need to decide on a loss limit before you can get started. You can even set a win limit if you wish, or simply spin the reels manually like we did in the good ole’ days.

The 200 Spins Yucatan’s Mystery Experience
The mayan pyramids are certainly a mystery in their own right, and it’s always intriguing with a well-made game based around this ancient and enigmatic culture. Red Tiger has come up with some decently innovative features here, and we were eager as always to see what their latest creation had to offer.
The pace of the game is pretty decent even without the turbo spins switched on, and we would give it a solid 6.5 on our unofficial “oddly satisfying” scale (where 10 means you hardly care about winning and losing and 1 means your stomach is tied in a knot). The spinning Mystery Coins can sometimes be a bit annoying, as they take their good time even when you gain nothing from it.
The volatility is more high than medium here for sure, and we got a lot of dead spins and minor wins during the base game grind. It took a good while to trigger the bonus round also, and the biggest win we had in the base game came from the Mystery Coin feature. It was only 6.8x our stake, so we were still far into the red before the bonus round was finally triggered.
We landed 3 pyramid scatters, and they did their magic to create the phantom 2x2 Super Mystery Symbol. The 10 free spins we got started out slow, and the Super Symbol moved around to no avail. It looked like we were in for only dead spins and minor wins here also, but with only 3 spins remaining we landed some nice stacks of Mystery symbols right next to the Super Symbol.
The whole bunch turned into the highest paying Mayan Priestess symbol, and a big part of the screen was now covered by this high value beauty. This landed us a “super win” of 51x our stake, and in total we got away with 52.4x our stake from the bonus round. Not really enough to recuperate our base game losses, but we still enjoyed our 200 spins session enough to be back for more. Hopefully, next time we’ll be able to see the Super Mystery Coin expand in size also, as this didn’t happen this time around.
Review Summary
Yucatan’s Mystery is pleasing to the eye, as we’ve come to expect from this developer, and Red Tiger has managed to make a somewhat worn-out theme look kind of fresh here. The sound effects and the game pace is also somewhat satisfying, but you will probably be annoyed at times when the ever-teasing Mystery Coins feature turns out to be a dud. Still, the feature is certainly engaging, and the base game is far better with it, than it would be without it.
Both the RTP and the potential is a bit lower than what you might expect, and Red Tiger also operates with customizable RTP ranges. This means that you need to beware, as operators might lower the already below average RTP even more. You need patience to appreciate this game. The problem is that there are plenty of games out there that might reward your patience a lot more than this game is capable of with a 4,284x potential max win.
Pros
- Mystery Coin feature
- Free spins with moving 2x2 Super Mystery Coin (can expand to 5x4)
- Medium to high volatility and 4,284x max win potential
Cons
- Triggering the bonus round can be hard here
- RTP is a bit below average (and beware of RTP ranges)

Aztec Bonanza - comes with an unusual 2-4-6-4-2 reel setup, and this is a somewhat volatile Pragmatic game with a massive 19,000x potential. The corner symbols are blocked, but they can be unlocked during gameplay. This can give you up to 7,776 paylines on a 5x6 grid potentially, and you need to unlock all 4 corners to trigger the bonus round here.
Aztec Spins - is yet another mesoamerican themed Red Tiger game, centered around the Aztec Empire this time. It plays out on a 6x4 reel setup and you can win up to 4,983x your stake here. You can look forward to a progressive multiplier up to 30x, as well as locked symbols and a bombardment of bonus features in the free spins round.
Mayan Eagle - is built around the Nobleways mechanic, which means you get 15,625 paylines on every spin. It also comes with Rolling Reels, mystery symbols and a bonus round with a progressive win multiplier that starts at 2x. Be warned however, as this is a highly volatile game, but wins up to 13,000x your stake is possible here.
