Animals of Africa Review

Animals of Africa is the third release from Gold Coin Studios, and it follows in the footsteps of their last title, Aquatic Treasures. While the previous game focused on marine life and dolphins, this follow-up title takes you to the savannah of Africa, like so many similar slots out there.

The main focus is still on expanding wilds, which this time comes with respins in the bonus round. Perhaps Gold Coin has taken our critique of their last game to heart, because the math model is a lot more respectable this time. We called Aquatic Treasures “a feeder fish dropped into a shark tank of volatile beasts”, while Animals of Africa at least tries its best to roar like a lion.

Animals of Africa slot Features

All the premium symbols can land as double symbols in this game, which means that up to 10 matching symbols on a payline is possible. The top paying lion symbol pays 250x for 10 on a payline, but this is not even close to what the Wild symbol offers.

Land 5 wilds on a payline, and you will win 1,000x your stake. Any wild that’s part of a premium symbol winning combo will always count as a double symbol. The wild cannot substitute for the scatter symbol. The scatter pays wherever it lands, as long as you land at least 3. Land 5 on a payline, and you will pocket a 20x scatter win.

Of course, landing 3 to 5 scatters anywhere will also trigger the bonus round, as it does in so many games. You get 12 free spins no matter how many scatters you land, and you will now benefit from expanding wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4. When you land a wild on the 3 middle reels, it expands to become a full wild reel.

The wild reel becomes frozen in place, and you get a free respin on the remaining reels. If you land a new wild on the remaining middle reels, it too will become sticky and another free respin is awarded.

This can repeat up to 3 times, and the respins don’t subtract from your free spins tally.

The 200 Spins Animals of Africa slot Experience

We struggled for a while in the base game here, not really getting anywhere. A decent win then came out of the blue as a sign of things taking a turn for the better. Not long after we landed 3 scatters, and the bonus round went pretty well for us. You can check out how it all played out in the 4-minute highlights video below (bonus round starts at 1:06 into the video).

Review Summary

Gold Coin Studios is yet another small studio trying their luck on Microgaming’s publishing platform. This is only their 3rd release, and the previous one, Aquatic Treasures, also focused on the animal kingdom and expanding wilds. Visually, Animals of Africa comes across as less dated, and the math model has certainly been improved a lot.

Still, a bonus round with expanding wilds on the 3 middle reels is not exactly revolutionary, and this was the main feature in the previous title also. The big difference here is that landing expanding wilds provide you with respins, and the fact that you can win up to 8,000x your stake. The dolphin title offered a max win of only 357x, which was hard to take seriously, and the volatility is also a lot higher here in the sun-beaten African savannah.

Pros

  • High paying wild symbol pays 1,000x for 5 on a payline
  • Bonus round with expanding wild respins on 3 middle reels
  • High volatility and 8,000x max win potential

Cons

  • Max bet is only £25 in this game
  • Not very original or daring in any way
