Narcos Mexico Review

NetEnt’s original branded effort, simply called Narcos, was a highly anticipated release. Unfortunately, the action-packed and visually superb installment was shamed by an unimpressive potential that let many players down. Sister studio, Red Tiger, who’s known for similar math model disappointments, clearly learned their lesson this time, as Narcos Mexico comes with a very solid 10,486x max win.

The audiovisuals are definitely engaging in this follow-up as well, but this time you’ve risen above the street-level violence to sit at the same table as the 4 cartel leaders. You get a couple of decent modifiers to keep you warm in the base game, while waiting to trigger the innovative and entertaining Cartel Spins round. Each cartel leader’s territory expands via sticky cash symbols, and a full-on cartel war breaks out if one leader infringes on another's turf.

Narcos Mexico Slot Features

The 4 cartel leaders are the premium symbols, and they pay between 2 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. Wild symbols can land on reels 2 to 4 only, and they step in for regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. The wilds hold no value of their own, however.

The Supply Drop feature triggers randomly, and you’ll then see a cargo plane fly above the grid and drop wilds onto random reel positions on reels 2, 3 and 4.

The other base game feature is the Double Cash modifier, and this one comes into play at random times after a win to double the payout.

Any win of 100x your stake, or more, may be exchanged for the Cartel Spins feature. You pocket the remaining amount above 100x, and the Win Exchange feature also comes with a gamble option for wins between 30x and 99x. You can thus gamble to win the Cartel Spins bonus round, but you then risk losing your win altogether.

You need 3 cartel spins scatters to land on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger the Cartel Spins Bonus Round organically, and it plays out on a 10x10 sized grid. The 2x2 sized cartel leaders occupy each corner of the grid, and you start with 3 spins in your tally.

Only blanks, cash mystery/territory symbols and 2 other modifier symbols land during the feature, and the spin tally resets to 3 when you land a non-blank symbol adjacent to a leader and/or his ever-expanding territory. Here’s an overview of the symbols:

  • Mystery Territory Cash Symbol - is a ‘?’ symbol that reveals a random bet multiplier cash prize.

This only happens if it lands adjacent to a cartel leader and/or his already existing sticky territory cash symbols.
  • Phone Symbol - applies an x2 multiplier to all cash symbols in a territory, but only if it lands adjacent to a territory.
  • Plane Symbol - boosts the bet multiplier values by adding 1 to 5 extra points to each territory cash symbol if it lands adjacent to a territory.

As you may understand from the above, each cartel territory is expanding as you land more and more adjacent sticky cash/territory symbols. When territory symbols from 2 (or more) different cartels land adjacent to each other, the Cartel War feature is activated.

The cartel leader with the biggest territory wins the battle, which means he takes over the turf, and the winner is determined randomly if the respective territory sizes are equal to each other. This benefits you if you land one of the modifier symbols adjacent to the now larger territory.

The 200 Spins Narcos Mexico Slot Experience

You get to see the Supply Drop wild feature in action early on in our 6:18-minute highlights video, and we grinded along in the base game for a good while before the Cartel Spins bonus round finally triggers. This happens at 3:27 into the video, and you can see how it all played out for yourself by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

We really like what Red Tiger has done with this follow-up, although the menacing vibe is a tad less tangible now that you’ve risen above the street thug level. The cargo plane flyover adds depth to the excellent visual presentation though, and the dropped wilds can award solid top-up wins together with the equally random x2 win boost. This is enough to keep you going in the base game, but the big highlight is undoubtedly the Cartel Spins round.

The expanding territory and ‘cartel war’ concept is very clever indeed, but we wouldn’t have minded semi-sticky modifier symbols that lingered for a while on non-adjacent positions. The feature is highly enjoyable and tense when things escalate however, and the 10,486x potential is far better than what’s on offer in the NetEnt original. Overall, this is a very solid sequel, and it demonstrates that innovation is still very possible within the hold-and-win concept.

Pros

  • Supply drop random wilds (3 middle reels)
  • Multiplier of x2 applied to random wins
  • Cartel Spins w/ territory expansion/war and 2 modifiers
  • Win Exchange feature (gamble/exchange to get bonus)
  • Win up to 10,486x your stake

Cons

  • Beware of customizable RTP ranges

Narcos - is NetEnt’s branded original release, and it’s unfortunately held back a bit by the very mediocre 1,506x potential.

Nothing is held back when it comes to the audiovisuals and the features though, and this is an action-packed and highly entertaining installment that includes drive-by shootings and a tense shoot out bonus round.

El Patron - is inspired by a certain South American drug lord, and this Stakelogic release comes with 5x5 reels with top/bottom bonus reels. These extra reels trigger action modifiers, and a machine gun becomes active in the bonus round. The volatility is high, and you can win up to 25,000x your stake.

Plata o Plomo - is a caricature-style Spinmatic release that revolves around the infamous Pablo Escobar, and this is one to try if you ever wanted to deliver his equally infamous ultimatum of “silver or lead”. This is essentially what you’ll do via the Pablo avatar in the bonus game, and you can win up to 9,000x your stake.
