Folsom Prison Review

NoLimit City has touched base with different kinds of lockup facilities since their smash hit San Quentin xWays, but Folsom Prison is the first pure-blood follow-up release. Folsom is perhaps most famous for hosting two Johnny Cash concerts in the 1960s, and notorious inmates like Charles Manson spent some time there as well.

The top-tier inmate character has ‘Cash’ tattooed on his forehead, so we assume he’s a fan of both the singer and of dough. The gangsta rap attitude of predecessor SQ is replaced by a grimmer ‘old school’ vibe in this release, something that’s clearly reflected in the highly atmospheric soundtrack. A lot revolves around the innovative Cockroach feature, which is brand new to this release, and it beats SQ by far when it comes to win cap probability.

Folsom Prison Slot Features

Most positions on the grid are literally “behind bars” at the start of each spin, and only the 2 middle positions on reels 1 to 4 are active by default. Locked positions above or below are unlocked by landing wilds, scatters, xSplit or xWays symbols in adjacent positions. This increases the number of win ways from 16 to 46,664 on the maxed out 4-6-6-6-4 grid.

The 5 inmate premium symbols pay between 1 and 2.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and you also have 2 different wild symbols. These are the regular wilds and the cockroach nest wilds, and they both step in for pay symbols to help complete wins.

Let’s take a look at the regular features, before we finish off with the bonus rounds.

Landing 2 scatters (appear on the 2 middle rows only) in the base game unlocks the reel 5 positions of the middle 2 rows. The scatters will then turn into xWays, xSplit, Wild or Cockroach Nest Wild symbols. xWays symbols turn into 2 to 4 instances of a randomly chosen matching symbol, which increases the number of win ways accordingly. The xSplit symbols split the entire row they appear on, which doubles the number of win ways before the xSplit symbol turns into 2 wilds. You get +1 extra spin when an xSplit scatter is part of a bonus round trigger, and Cockroach Nest multipliers are increased by +1 if they split.

The starting positions of a Cockroach Nest always turn wild, and cockroaches will then walk around to add multipliers to random positions.

Cockroaches also open up any locked positions they walk over, and the multiplier values they hand out can be x1, x2, x3 or x10.

The Walk The Line Bonus Round triggers when you land 3 scatters in view, and this awards 8 free spins. You get a 2-4-4-4-2 default grid during the feature, and at least 1 Cockroach Nest Wild per spin will be unleashed. Landing a single scatter award extra spins, as you’re upgraded to The Chair tier (upgrade hit rate is 1 in 85).

The Chair Bonus Round triggers from the base game when you land 4 scatters in view, and you get 8 free spins also here. The default grid is activated as 4-4-4-4-4, and you get 3 Cockroach Nest Wilds per spin as a minimum. The base game hit rate is 1 in 78,000, compared to 1 in 195 for the tier 1 feature.

The yellow star on the left takes eligible players into the Bonus Buy menu, but this is not available for UK players for sure. You can buy Walk the Line for 68x your stake (96.36 % RTP), and The Chair for 1,500x your stake (96.31 % RTP). You also get 3 lucky draw random options with prices ranging from 82 to 784 x your stake, depending on the feature odds.

The 200 Spins Folsom Prison Slot Experience

You get to see a few base game features and wins, before we purchase The Chair feature around the 1-minute mark. The bonus round plays out for the remainder of the 4-minute highlights video, and you get to see some decent wins with win stories to boot.

Review Summary

Not attempting to out-alpha San Quentin in this follow-up is probably a wise move by NoLimit City, as that kind of “arms race” would escalate real soon if even more installments are planned. Folsom Prison has a razor sharp shivvie edge over the heavy-hitting predecessor though, and that’s the 1 in 6 million win cap probability from the base game. The max win chance increases to 1 in 37K in the Walk The Line feature, and it goes up to a solid 1 in 900 in The Chair round.

The 75,000x potential may be half of what you get in SQ, but it’s still miles above the average slot release. Combine that with highly attractive win cap probabilities, as well as NoLimit City’s proven win cap track record, and there’s plenty of reasons to pay Folsom Prison a visit. The soundtrack alone makes it worth checking out, and this follow-up will appeal more to the Johnny Cash crowd than gangsta rap wannabes.

Pros

If you enjoy Folsom Prison Slot you should also try:

San Quentin xWays - is the highly successful and hard-hitting original prison release from NoLimit City, and you get xWays and razor split symbols from special enhancer cells. Up to 3 jumping wilds are unleashed in the Lockdown bonus round, and you can win up to 150,000x your stake.

Remember Gulag - takes you to an even grimmer form of prison, namely the forced-labor camps in the communist Soviet regime in the WW2 era.

Folsom Prison Slot Review 3

This NoLimit City release comes with up to 614,656 win ways, as well as plenty of xMechanic modifiers. Elements of humor have been included in the win story and features, and you can win up to 30,000x your stake.

Mental - is the most “mental” release in the history of online slots in pretty much any way possible. This NoLimit City insanity plays out on a 3-2-3-2-3 grid with grotesque audiovisuals to say the least, and the chaos of slashing and cutting xMechanic symbols will overwhelm your senses even more. It’s a must try in other words, with a 66,666x win cap.
